Being CEO of six companies:
“I love it. High highs and low lows every single day. It doesn’t get easier; you get stronger. But I’ve surrounded myself with really great people and great leaders and a great team. People that are super invested in the mission and that makes it a lot more fun and makes the journey a lot more fun.”
Importance of hiring people with different skills:
“It’s essential, because if you look at the skill sets and personalities and perspectives that are required to build a sustainable company they are, in and of themselves, so diverse. And I think that a lot of times when you hire people that you like or that you know or that you get along with, you amplify your own weaknesses. You double up on your strength, but you amplify your weakness. So, one of the most important things from a hiring strategy standpoint is actually understanding the needs of the organization and making sure that you are hiring to your weaknesses so you can narrow into your zone of genius and do what you do exceptionally well.”
Constantly strive to make your business better:
“First of all, you always have to be top grading your organization because people who are great for a season and a reason in your growth journey, as the business evolves and elevates, you go from needing generalists to specialists. And a lot of times people can carry from one season to the next, but they’re not going to be evolving with the company long-term. So, one of the things I say to my clients all the time is that you have to be always recruiting. You have to always be thinking in terms of acquiring top talent for your organization and there really is no ‘easy button’ for doing that.”
Kelly’s greatest strength:
“Focus. Absolutely. I can take something very complex, and I can make it simple, so that people can understand it and execute on it. And, I have the ability to lock into what is needed to achieve an outcome and peel everything else away, and I think that’s why I think I’ve had success building really high-performance teams. It’s because I’m able to convey to them that these are the basic drills, and these are the things that are going to move the needle.”
The Common Denominator of the issues that CEOs face:
“I think a lot of people start a business because they’re passionate and they want to make money, they want to use their talent for good, they want to make a difference, and they have a thing that they like to do. I think a lot of people get to a certain level in business by blunt force. A lot of hard work and a lot of massive action. And that carries you to a certain point. And then you get to a point where now you are the business, and a lot of people don’t know how to cross the bridge from being the business to building the business.
Importance of striving for balance:
“When you pursue success at all costs and you’re not putting your family first, and you’re not taking time for your health, and you’re not sleeping, and you’re not prioritizing other areas of your life, at some point it just kind of unravels.”
The key to scaling your business is this one thing:
“I think the most important thing for someone who wants to create generational wealth and generational impact is staying power.”
